EDTA SOLUTION 40 percent

SKU: RXSOL-33-6604-230
EDTA Disodium, 10 Percent (w/v) Solution ,
is generally used as a gentle non-enzymatic cell dissociation reagent, a chelating reagent and in biological and electrophoresis buffer systems.

RXSOL Tetrasodium EDTA 40% Liquid is a concentrated aqueous solution of tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Na₄EDTA), a powerful chelating and sequestrating agent.

It binds polyvalent metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and other metal ions, converting them into stable water-soluble complexes. This helps prevent precipitation and assists in removing mineral and metallic deposits during industrial cleaning.

The product is particularly useful in reverse osmosis (RO) membrane cleaning/CIP, where EDTA can assist in removing metal-containing deposits and certain inorganic/organic foulants. DuPont's FilmTec RO/NF technical manual specifically lists 1.0 wt% Na₄EDTA with 0.1 wt% NaOH as an alternative cleaning solution for biofouling, subject to membrane compatibility and the manufacturer's cleaning limits.

Unit: Kg.Liq

Application

Manufacturing, EDTA is used to improve stability of some pharmaceutical products, detergents, liquid soaps, shampoos, agricultural chemical sprays, contact lens cleaners and cosmetics. It is also used in certain blood collection tubes used by medical laboratories.

Wide areas of application for EDTA 4 Na liquid

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems

RXSOL Tetrasodium EDTA 40% can be used as a component of RO membrane cleaning/CIP formulations, particularly for:
  • Metal-containing deposits
  • Calcium-associated fouling
  • Magnesium deposits
  • Iron fouling
  • Manganese deposits
  • Certain inorganic scale deposits
  • Metal-organic complexes
  • Difficult mixed fouling

RO membranes progressively accumulate contaminants that can reduce permeate flow and affect system performance, making periodic CIP an important maintenance operation.

  • Cooling-water systems
  • Industrial vessels
  • Pipelines
  • Process-water systems
  • Metal-cleaning formulations

Industrial Area

EDTA-4Na 40% Aqueous Solution

Tetrasodium EDTA Solution 40%

Product Description

EDTA-4Na 40% Aqueous Solution is a concentrated liquid solution of Tetrasodium Ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Tetrasodium EDTA), a powerful water-soluble chelating and sequestering agent.

The product forms stable, water-soluble complexes with polyvalent metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese and zinc. By binding these metal ions, EDTA-4Na helps prevent unwanted precipitation, scale formation, metal-catalyzed reactions and interference with industrial processes.

The 40% liquid form provides convenient handling, rapid dispersion and accurate dosing compared with solid EDTA salts and is suitable for use in water treatment, industrial cleaning, detergents, textile processing, chemical formulations and other industrial applications.

Applications

EDTA-4Na 40% Solution is widely used in:

  • Industrial water treatment
  • Cooling-water treatment formulations
  • Boiler and process-water treatment
  • Scale-control formulations
  • Industrial cleaning chemicals
  • Detergents and alkaline cleaners
  • Metal cleaning and surface treatment
  • Textile processing
  • Pulp and paper processing
  • Oilfield chemical formulations
  • Chemical manufacturing
  • Metal-ion control
  • Formulations requiring stabilization against trace metals

Water Treatment

In water-treatment formulations, EDTA-4Na binds calcium, magnesium, iron and other dissolved metal ions, helping keep them in soluble complexes and reducing their ability to interfere with treatment processes or contribute to undesirable deposits.

It is particularly useful where hardness sequestration and trace-metal control are required.

Industrial Cleaning

EDTA-4Na can improve detergent and cleaner performance by binding hardness ions that would otherwise interfere with surfactants and alkaline cleaning agents.

It is useful in formulations for:

Heavy-duty cleaners, degreasers, equipment cleaners, alkaline cleaning formulations and scale-removal/support formulations.

Advantages

EDTA-4Na 40% Solution provides high chelating efficiency, excellent water solubility, convenient liquid handling and compatibility with many alkaline formulations. Its liquid form eliminates the dissolution step associated with powdered EDTA and makes it particularly suitable for automated dosing and large-scale industrial formulation.

Storage & Handling

Store in the original tightly closed container in a cool, dry and well-ventilated location. Protect against extreme temperatures and contamination.

Because EDTA-4Na 40% solution is alkaline, appropriate gloves and eye protection should be used during handling. Refer to the product SDS for complete safety and handling requirements.

Procedure

RXSOL Tetrasodium EDTA 40% should not be considered a universal RO membrane cleaner by itself.

The correct cleaning chemistry depends on the foulant. Acid cleaning is generally used for carbonate/mineral scale, while alkaline cleaning is commonly used for organic and biological fouling. EDTA is particularly useful where metal-ion fouling or metal-associated deposits are involved.

DuPont's FilmTec manual gives 1.0 wt% Na₄EDTA + 0.1 wt% NaOH as an alternative cleaning formulation under specified membrane cleaning conditions.

Suggested EDTA CIP Starting Formulation

For compatible RO membranes:

Component Concentration
RXSOL Tetrasodium EDTA 40% 2.5%
Sodium Hydroxide 0.10%
RO Permeate / DI Water Balance

This provides approximately:

1.0% active Na₄EDTA

Note

EDTA is short for ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, a stabilizer used in cosmetics to prevent ingredients in a given formula from binding with trace elements (particularly minerals) that can be present in water.

Identification

This prevents calcium from remaining available to form insoluble deposits.

Similarly, EDTA can complex:

  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Manganese
  • Zinc

This makes RXSOL Tetrasodium EDTA 40% particularly useful where mineral deposits or metal-containing foulants are contributing to equipment or membrane fouling.

Chelating agents are widely used in cleaning because they can capture metal ions and transport them away from contaminated surfaces.
